National Association of Conservation Districts
NACD's mission is to serve conservation districts by providing national leadership and a unified voice for natural resource conservation.
Water 2025 Challenge Grants
Water 2025 is a problem-solving initiative focused on local water supply issues in the Western states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
The initiative helps avert potential conflicts among various water resource user communities such as agriculture, wildlife and a quickly growing urban population. Water supply issues are addressed by improving conservation and efficiency, better monitoring of water resources, and modernizing aging water supply structures such as dams, reservoirs, pumping stations, pipelines and canals.
Water 2025 is administered by the Bureau of Reclamation under the Department of the Interior (DOI).
Water 2025 Grants
By providing funding through challenge grants, Water 2025 encourages voluntary water banks and other market-based measures to improve technology for water conservation and efficiency. It also seeks to promote increased cooperation and collaboration among federal, state, tribal and private organizations. Water 2025 also provides financial and technical resources to support water conservation research and development, and innovative technologies such as desalinization that will help alleviate existing water supply conflicts and prevent new problems before they occur.
Water 2025 Grant Distribution
Projects are selected through a competitive process, based on their ability to meet the goals, with a focus on projects that can be completed within 24 months.
NACD supports increased funding for Water 2025 Challenge Grants in the Fiscal Year 2008 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill.
